Discover Lake Campton: A Hidden Treasure in Saint Charles
Tucked into the scenic landscape of western Saint Charles, Illinois, Lake Campton is more than just a lake—it’s a vibrant community hub, a recreational paradise, and a living piece of local history. Originally known as Fisher’s Lake, this stunning 39-acre impoundment was created in 1953 when visionary developer Bill Fisher built a 15-foot-high earthen dam across Ferson Creek. Today, its waters still wind through the Ferson and Otter Creek watersheds, eventually joining the mighty Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
Over the years, Lake Campton has evolved into a peaceful yet dynamic escape for those lucky enough to live near its shores. Now managed by the Lake Campton Property Owners Association (LCPOA), founded in the 1970s, the lake is reserved for members and their guests—offering exclusive access to fishing, kayaking, electric boating, ice skating, and serene lakeside views. A limited number of outside fishing memberships are also available.
Anglers will find a healthy population of bluegill, largemouth bass, and crappie, with occasional catches of northern pike, catfish, and shad. (Note: All bass and pike must be catch-and-release.) Way too many carp! The lake’s mud bottom and aquatic vegetation provide excellent spawning habitat, but also invite a bit of a wild side—algae and weed growth that’s actively managed by LCPOA through regular maintenance and lake treatments during the warmer months.
While natural forces like runoff and sedimentation have gradually reshaped the lake’s depth—now averaging 9 feet on the east side and less than a foot on the west—the LCPOA continues to invest in its health and future. From fish population surveys and water quality monitoring to invasive species control and environmental education, the association plays an active role in preserving the beauty and biodiversity of the lake.
LCPOA members are also stewards beyond the shoreline—volunteering with groups like the Ferson Creek Watershed Committee and Kane County’s Natural Resources Advisors. They lead initiatives in sustainable landscaping, native planting, and shoreline protection to ensure Lake Campton remains a thriving natural asset for years to come.
Lake Campton and its designated access properties are privately owned and governed by the Lake Campton Property Owners Association. The community is located within the Village of Campton Hills and operates in accordance with the Village’s zoning ordinances and applicable regulations.
Whether you’re casting a line at sunrise, skating across its frozen surface in winter, or simply enjoying the view, Lake Campton is where nature and community come together.
